SSMU offering discounted Frosh packages to McGill ghetto families
As part of its ongoing efforts to make McGill’s freshman orientation week a more inclusive experience, the Students’ Society of McGill University (SSMU) has mandated each of its faculties to offer 50% discounts on Frosh packages to all families living in the Milton-Parc community.
While the family demographic has traditionally shown great displeasure towards the increased neighbourhood noise levels that result from the Frosh activities, SSMU believes that those lingering hostilities can be erased by giving them a more fulfilling Frosh week.
“It’s disappointing that Milton-Parc families have come away from past Froshes feeling dissatisfied, but with this discounted package, we feel that they’ll finally come around and take full advantage of this wonderful opportunity,” said SSMU President Kareem Ibrahim. “Over the past few years, all faculties have taken huge strides in making Frosh more wholesome and inclusive—especially for underage participants—so there’s never been a better time for these valued members of our community to join the incoming class of students and hopefully form friendships that will last for their entire tenure at McGill.”
Some faculties have even begun adjusting their Frosh itinerary so that families with young children will be more prominently represented. According to Arts Undergraduate Society (AUS) President Jacob Greenspon, it was as a result of those efforts that the AUS settled on “Willy Wonka’s Candy Frosh” as the official name for its orientation week.
“We were just sitting there and started thinking about that saying, ‘As happy as a kid in a candy store!’” began Greenspon. “So then, we were like, ‘What could be happier than a kid in a candy Frosh?!’ Then the idea for the Dep candy crawl came to us, and the rest is history.”
As of press time, over 20 families have already signed on to participate in the various Froshes. Many have also reportedly expressed interest in putting a team together for the Management Undergraduate Society’s (MUS) Winter Carnival.
